Bardos

This is an image of the 'Wheel of Samsara'. The wheel is divided into six sections: each a different realm of rebirth. Each section represents one of the following realms:
1. Devas or gods.
2. Ashuras or titans (anti-gods, jealous gods, demigods, aka "demons")
3. Manushyas or humans.
4. Tiryakas or animals.
5. Pretas or hungry ghosts.
6. Narakas or demons (hell beings)

The wheel is in the grip of Mahakala, the Lord of Death, who is essentially a manifestation of our compassion. The point of buddhist practice is to escape the wheel of Samsara. In other words, to be free from compulsory rebirth and to free your consciousness from being dragged through time. Outside the wheel is Nirvana. Nirvana is not a 'heaven' but liberation from dualism, delusion, suffering, and the ego. It is your experiencing the true nature of reality, which is emptiness and compassion. Nirvana is like a field of superconsciousness that is everywhere. But even this is a dualistic view, that is why in the Mahayana, they say that Samsara and Nirvana are one, and it depends on you and your consciousness which one you will experience.
